Deputy Chief Tom Aftanas
The Deputy Chief of Police assists the Chief of Police in planning, budgeting, public relations and staff supervision. The Deputy Chief performs the duties of the Chief of Police during his absence. Duties of the Deputy Chief also include the handling of complaints against police personnel. The Deputy Chief assures that all complaints are investigated in a timely and fair manner. The Deputy Chief of Police is actively involved in the hiring process for police officers and civilian employees, and the transfer, suspension, or discharge of personnel.
Deputy Chief Tom Aftanas earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Southern Illinois University in 1990. The Deputy Chief also successfully completed the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University as well as the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Deputy Chief Aftanas began his law enforcement career with the Forest Park Police Department in 1991 and was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief in June 2006.
