Chief of Police Tom Aftanas
Chief Tom Aftanas has worked for the Forest Park Police Department for over 25 years and has served in a supervisory capacity since 1998. Through those years, Aftanas has served as a patrol officer, a tactical officer and a detective. He also served as a Watch Commander, Street Sergeant, Detective, Deputy Chief of Police, Acting Chief of Police and Chief of Police since June, 2015.
Throughout his career in Forest Park, Aftanas trained new police recruits as a field training officer and was one of the first Crime Scene Investigators for the Village. He was also the supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Aftanas has strived to be fair and professional and works hard to continuously improve the relationship between the community and the police department. He truly believes in the “Community Policing” Philosophy. Aftanas implemented the first Citizen’s Police Academy in 2001.
Aftanas attended Southern Illinois University and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice. He also attended the Northwestern University “School of Police Staff and Command” in 2006 and the National FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 2007.
